This story is often attributed to Czar Nicholas II, though some refer to it as a parable. Either way, it carries a powerful lesson for every one of us.

Czar Nicholas ruled Russia with authority, yet he also had a lifelong friend who was very poor. When disease swept through the land, that friend lost his wife and was left with a single infant son. In desperation and love, he called Nicholas to his home and asked him to raise the child as his own. Nicholas agreed, took the baby back to the palace, and brought him up with care, teaching him the way he should go.

As the boy grew, he entered military service like all young men of his day. Gifted and disciplined, he rose quickly through the ranks and was eventually placed in charge of the regiment’s bookkeeping. But beneath his success, he carried a dark secret—he had developed a deep addiction to gambling.

The debts piled up faster than he could hide them. In fear and shame, he began altering the books to cover what he had taken. One night, overwhelmed by guilt, he opened the ledgers to see the full amount he owed. The total was staggering. There was no way he could ever repay it.

Believing he had dishonored the man who raised him, he wrote a short note:
“A debt too great to pay.”

Terrified to take his own life, he reached for a bottle of whiskey to give himself the courage to pull the trigger. But instead of finding resolve, he drank until he passed out—slumped over the desk, gun in his lap, the books wide open.

That same night, the Czar—who often disguised himself as an ordinary soldier to check on morale—walked through the camp. As was his custom, he stopped by his son’s tent. There he found him unconscious, the empty bottle beside him, the gun resting across his legs.

Nicholas saw the note. He saw the books. And in a moment, he understood everything.

He took the candle he carried, let the wax drip onto the ledger, and pressed his royal seal into it. Under the young man’s desperate confession, he wrote two words:

“Paid in full.”

This is Jesus.

Our debt is greater than anything we could ever repay.
Our sin runs deeper than anything we could ever fix on our own.
No amount of effort, goodness, or strength can erase what separates us from God.

But Jesus came.

He stepped into our tent—into our brokenness, our fear, our shame—and He saw the truth of our condition. And instead of condemning us, He paid the debt Himself. With His own blood, He stamped across our lives:

“Paid in full.”

If we believe in Him, trust in His sacrifice, and receive His grace, He carries us home.
And because He paid the price, we will live with Him for eternity.

God’s plan to redeem and save us didn’t begin in a moment of crisis; it began long before, rooted in His unchanging love. But to see the fullness of that plan, we must first understand the brokenness that made redemption necessary.

Long before John and Jesus walked the earth, God spoke through the prophets. This was because humanity’s choices had gone terribly wrong. People were created for a living, personal relationship with God. Yet they chose their own way, rejecting His design and pursuing their own desires. Those choices opened the door for sin to enter the world. People decided to live life on their terms instead of God’s. This shattered the relationship we were created to enjoy, showing the need for God’s plan to save and redeem us. And while we often believe we can chart our own course, that path always leads to destruction, disappointment, and deep unhappiness.

Scripture makes this truth unmistakably clear: sin separates people from a holy God. No amount of rule-keeping, religious effort, sacrifice, or good behavior done in our own strength can repair what was broken. Humanity needed more than self-improvement; we needed a Savior. Only God Himself could restore us, bring us back into relationship with Him, and lead us into His perfect purpose and design for our lives.

“Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save… but your iniquities have separated you from your God.”
— Isaiah 59:1–2 (NIV)

Humanity could not save itself. But God did not turn away.

Because God loves us and desires a real relationship with us, He chose to come to us. From the beginning, the prophets announced that God Himself would step into history to rescue His people, restore what was broken, and bring salvation.

Isaiah proclaimed:

“A voice cries: In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
— Isaiah 40:3 (ESV)

This prophecy was not only a call to repentance. It was a declaration that Yahweh Himself would come to accomplish His plan to save and redeem.

Isaiah repeatedly affirmed this truth:

“I, the LORD, am your Savior.” — Isaiah 43:11 (NLT)

“Here is your God… He will come and save you.” — Isaiah 35:4 (NLT)

“Behold your God! Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might.” — Isaiah 40:9–10 (ESV)

Micah added a crucial detail:

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah… out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” — Micah 5:2 (NIV)

God was not sending another messenger.
He was coming Himself!

Jesus came not only to forgive sin. He also came to call people to repentance, a turning away from who we were and how we were living, and a turning toward God and a new way of life.

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” — Matthew 4:17 (NIV)

To repent means more than feeling sorry. It means choosing to leave old ways behind and allowing God to transform the heart, the mind, and the direction of one’s life.

God came to earth because He cares deeply about us. Through Jesus, anyone who believes is forgiven, restored to God, and given new life as part of His plan to redeem us.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
— John 3:16 (NIV)

Behold Your God — The Savior Who Comes to Redeem

But God did not leave humanity wandering in the dark. Even in the midst of our rebellion, He kept speaking, sending His prophets to remind His people that He had not abandoned His plan or His promise. Through every generation, God whispered hope into a broken world. He pointed forward to the One who would restore what sin had shattered. And when the weight of despair felt heaviest, God lifted the eyes of His people. He declared a message of courage, comfort, and certainty:

Those who trust in Jesus are promised eternal life with God. Until that day, we are called to live like Jesus, walking in humility, obedience, and love. We do this while we wait for the fullness of what He has promised. Through God’s plan to redeem and save, we are given the strength to continue.

O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain;
O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength;
lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!

Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him:

Eternity

Christmas didn’t begin in Bethlehem.
Christmas began in the heart of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, long before the world was formed. Understanding why Jesus came is central to the celebration of Christmas.

From the opening pages of Scripture to the final “Amen,” the Bible tells one story:

God created us.
We rebelled.
We cannot save ourselves.
God came to save us.

Christmas is the moment the eternal plan stepped into time.

The Problem: We All Need Saving

From the very beginning, Scripture is honest about the human condition.

• “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
• “There is none righteous, no, not one.” (Romans 3:10)

We don’t just make mistakes; we are spiritually dead without God.
We cannot fix ourselves, clean ourselves, or “be good enough.”

The Old Testament shows this clearly:

• “Every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” (Genesis 6:5)
• “All we like sheep have gone astray.” (Isaiah 53:6)

Why Jesus Came

Every one of us needed rescue.

Each of us needed forgiveness.

All of us needed a Savior.

And God promised One.

The Promise: Jesus Foretold From the Beginning

Jesus is woven through every book of the Bible. The Old Testament doesn’t merely predict His coming, it displays Him. As the Angel of the Lord, the visible presence of God, the promised Redeemer, and the eternal Son, He steps into the story again and again until the day He steps into the world.

In the New Testament, He reveals the fullness of that love and redemption, coming to save us from our sins because we could never save ourselves. He took our sins upon Himself on the cross, and when we believe in Him and trust in His holy power to save, we are made alive through Him, forgiven, and welcomed into eternity.

And this is the beauty of the Trinity: The Father Commands and Directs the plan, the Son carries out the plan, and the Holy Spirit sustains the plan: three distinct persons, one perfect power, working together for our salvation and our good.

For YOU

And this promise isn’t distant or complicated; it’s for you, right now. If you believe in Jesus today, if you open your heart to Him and trust in what He has done for you, you too can be redeemed. His forgiveness becomes your freedom, His life becomes your life, and His victory becomes your hope. When you place your faith in Him, you are welcomed into the family of God, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and assured that you will be with Him — and with all God’s people — for eternity.

No Specific Prayer

You can just say”

“Jesus, help me – I believe in You.”

“Jesus, save me.”

Or, if your heart is ready for more words, you can pray something like:

“Jesus, I need You. Believing that You died for my sins and rose again, I ask You to save me, forgive me, and remember me. With my heart open to You today, be my Lord, my Savior, and my hope. Thank You for receiving me, just as You received the thief on the cross. Amen.”

Because salvation isn’t about perfect wording, it’s about a heart turning toward Jesus, just like the thief who hung beside Him and simply said:

“Remember me.”

And Jesus answered with mercy that still stands today.

A Story of Last‑Minute Mercy and Salvation

As Jesus hung on the cross, two criminals were crucified beside Him: one on His right and one on His left. Both men had lived lives that led them to this place of judgment. One joined the crowd in mocking Jesus. But as the hours passed, something changed in the heart of one of them.

He watched Jesus suffer without anger, and the sight stunned him.

He heard Jesus pray, “Father, forgive them,” and the words shook him.

Seeing innocence where others saw defeat, he finally understood.

And suddenly, the truth broke through.

One criminal hurled insults, but the other rebuked him and said, “We are punished justly… but this man has done nothing wrong.” Using the last strength he had, he turned his head toward Jesus and whispered the simplest, most desperate prayer:

“Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”

Time had run out to fix his life.

He lost the chance to make amends

Any opportunity to prove himself had disappeared.

There were no long prayers or perfect words left.

Only faith, a plea and a heart turning toward the Savior.

And Jesus, full of compassion even in His agony, answered with one of the most hope–filled promises in all of Scripture:

“Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”

In that moment, a guilty man became a redeemed man.
A dying man received eternal life.
A sinner found a Savior.

He believed, and Jesus saved him—not by earning it and not by deserving it.

A Weary World Waiting

For four hundred years, heaven had been silent.

Prophets stopped speaking.

Visions no longer came.

God’s voice seemed silent. But then, a profound silence was broken by the God who came to earth.

When Hope Feels Lost — God Speaks Again

A Hope Story from Exodus

Moses had obeyed at God’s command to go and Free His People.
He had stepped into his calling.
He had spoken to Pharaoh.
And it had gone terribly wrong.

Instead of freedom, the Israelites faced harsher slavery.
Instead of breakthrough, Moses faced backlash.
He cried out to God, questioning everything:

“Why did You ever send me?” — Exodus 5:22, (MSG)

And then — in Exodus 6 — God answered.

Not with rebuke.
Not with silence.
But with reminders of who He is.

God’s Response to a Weary Person (Exodus 6:1–8)

God said:

• “I am the Lord.”
• “I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob…”
• “I have heard the groaning of the Israelites…”
• “I will bring you out…”
• “I will redeem you…”
• “I will take you as My own people…”
• “I will be your God…”
• “I will bring you to the land I swore…”

Eight promises.
Eight declarations of identity.
Eight anchors of hope.

God didn’t change the circumstances immediately.
He changed Moses’ perspective.

This story is for anyone who has ever:

• obeyed God and felt punished for it
• stepped out in faith and hit a wall
• questioned their calling
• felt like hope was slipping away

It reminds us:

• God sees the groaning we hide
• God speaks when we feel forgotten
• God repeats His promises when we’re too weary to remember
• God’s identity is our anchor when circumstances feel unstable
• Hope is not the absence of struggle — it’s the presence of God in the middle of it

Prayer: When Hope Feels Lost

Lord, You are El Dober Od, the God who speaks again
When I feel like I’ve failed, remind me of Your promises.
When obedience leads to hardship, remind me of Your presence.
When I question why You sent me, whisper again that You are the Lord.

I am Lord: faithful, near and not finished. I have great plans for you.

A Good Friend

I want to share a story that continues to give me joy. It shows how God works in quiet, beautiful ways during everyday life. He constantly works, never stopping because HE is watching over us ALWAYS!

I have a dear friend who is ninety-five years old. Yet she lives with such remarkable energy that people often forget her true age. She works out every day, drives others wherever they need to go, and offers help so naturally. Kindness seems to pour out of her spirit. Everyone who knows her sees her as an example of faithful living. I constantly find myself encouraged by the strength and energy of her Godly life. Her presence reminds me that a life rooted in Jesus produces endurance, generosity, and grace. These qualities shine brightly, even in the later seasons of life. I often look at her and realize that her daily faithfulness builds a testimony far stronger than words alone could ever express.

One afternoon she drove along a busy highway filled with fast-moving cars. Then her tire suddenly exploded with a loud burst that shook her entire vehicle. Her car wobbled violently. Yet she stayed calm and guided it toward the next exit. As she did so, she prayed quietly, “Okay God, what should I do now?”

She reached a safe place just as she finished her prayer, not realizing that God had already prepared an unexpected answer before she even asked. A truck pulled in behind her, and she looked up to see her own son stepping out with concern. He had driven from another state to visit her. Her son recognized her car long before the tire burst. He followed her down the exit ramp and immediately took over so he could repair the damage. He changed the tire, offered reassurance, and made sure she received every bit of help she needed. His actions showed love that reflected God’s perfect timing.

Some people might say her years of kindness finally returned to her. However, I know this moment revealed something far deeper about God’s incredible goodness. God places people exactly where we need them. He arranges events with such perfect precision that we can only stand amazed at His loving involvement.

This truth echoes the message in Numbers 23:21, where God spoke blessings over Israel through Balaam. Balaam was told to curse them even when Balak (a king) demanded curses and harm.

God declared that He saw no misfortune in Jacob. This was not because they were flawless, but because His love covered them and guided them.

Anyone who reads Scripture understands that humans remember wrongs easily. Yet God removes sin as far as the east is from the west forever.

These truths remind me that when I turn to Him, He directs my steps, provides unexpected help, and guides me. His guidance is with purpose rooted in His love. I see HIM, every day in every way. Look for HIM, because HE is there for you too.

I leave this moment remembering that God’s guidance never arrives late. His timing weaves ordinary events into extraordinary reminders of His faithful love that surrounds us daily.

As you consider your own journey, can you remember moments when God arranged help with such perfect timing? These moments can reshape how you understood His presence in your life.

We five siblings grew up loving to snowmobile. Our brothers still continue the adventure every year. The oldest is what people call a “Sunday driver.” He moves slowly along the paths, taking in the beauty of fresh snow on the trees and the earth. The youngest is a daredevil, leading groups to the most adventurous slopes and the highest peaks across the U.S. and Canada. He buys a dozen or more snow licenses so he can ride in any state he wants. Wherever the snow is deep and the mountains are steep, he’s there. On one memorable trip, help came up the mountain just when it was needed most.

Scary, brave, or otherwise, the pictures he takes always look like he’s on top of the world. Mountain peaks are covered in deep snow, with a smile stretching ear to ear and a thumbs up. It was on one of these trips that help came up the mountain when they needed it the most.

Now to the story. My oldest brother had company visiting, and they went out on a Sunday sledding trip (they don’t call it snowmobiling anymore; it’s “sledding”). His company wasn’t paying much attention to the trail. As my brother followed behind, he suddenly saw him disappear over the edge of a cliff. All paths in those mountains have steep cliffs. My brother jumped off his sled and peered over. Thankfully, the deep snow had stopped his friend and the sled halfway down the slope. Determined, my brother stomped through snow up to his thighs. It was exhausting work until he reached him.

He began digging and thinking through the scenarios he’d seen before. This wasn’t the first time someone had gone over a cliff. Usually, if they can free the sled, they drive it to the bottom and call a helicopter to haul it out. Sometimes they wait until spring if the ravine is too deep. As he pondered what to do, suddenly a sledder came flying up the mountain like lightning. He passed him in a flash, popped over the edge, disappeared, and then reappeared minutes later. Descending slowly toward my brother, the Trailblazer stopped, flicked up his helmet shield, and said, “Hey bro, need some help?”

It was our youngest brother, the daredevil. Only he, and a few like him, could have climbed that cliff. My oldest brother grinned from ear to ear. We are big believers in God’s power, and in that moment, God was showing off His incredible strength and provision.

Together they dug out the sled. Then the youngest climbed back on and told the oldest to follow him down into the ravine. He explained that he had already packed the snow with his riding. If they stayed on the same path, they could climb back out. With trepidation but total faith in his (our) younger brother, he followed. They descended steadily, then at the bottom lined up one behind the other, picked up speed, and pushed their sleds to the limit. Straight up the cliff they went, and with one final turn, they burst over the top.

For my oldest brother, it was the greatest adventure he ever wanted to experience. For our youngest brother, it was just another fun day of pleasure sledding. He gave a salute and rode off toward a higher peak. Meanwhile, my oldest brother and his friend returned to the cabin, grateful for the rescue and for God’s hand in it all.

Reflection:

Life often feels like riding along mountain paths: breathtaking, but filled with hidden cliffs. Sometimes, like my brother’s friend, we aren’t paying attention and suddenly find ourselves slipping into danger or despair. The drop looks too steep, the snow too deep, and the way back seems impossible.

But just as our youngest brother appeared at the right moment, God sends help when we least expect it. He shows His power not only in the rescue, but in the path He prepares for us to climb back out. What looked like the end becomes a testimony of His strength.

You’ve faced your own “cliffs” – moments where you felt stuck, overwhelmed, or buried in the weight of life. This story is a reminder that God is not absent in those places. He is present, packing the snow beneath your feet, preparing a way forward, and sending people who can guide you back to safety.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me.” — Psalm 28:7 (NIV)

Your peril is not the end of your story. With faith, and with God’s help, even the steepest cliffs can become paths of purpose.
